Professional tree climbing competitions are held around the world to provide a platform for arborists to learn about the latest in climbing techniques and innovations in equipment. They showcase the highest level of professional skills and safety, providing a competitive learning environment for those working in the industry.
The very best competitions are the National and International events – generally invitation only events (by qualifying or wildcard). These events go one step further than the Regional TCCs in New Zealand, with the final event being the Masters’ Challenge. This consists of one event where top qualifying competitors from the Prelims are scored on technique and skill in a Work Climb type event. The competitors in this round with the highest score are named the male and female champions.
National Championship (NTCC)
NZ Arb’s flagship Climbing event is the National Tree Climbing Championship
. Typically held near the end of the year, in conjunction with the Annual Conference, it pulls the cream of New Zealand climbers together for one of the best tree climbing shows on earth.
The Male and Female Champions earn the right to represent New Zealand at the International TCC.

International Championship (ITCC)
This is the Worlds. The very best climbers from all over the world – from all the Chapters of the ISA – compete to be crowned World Champions.
New Zealand have had three climbers win 6 titles! Including two ‘double’s (both Men’s and Women’s Champion in the same year) – no other country has achieved this feat!

Asia-Pacific Championship (APTCC)
In recent times, the ISA have developed three geographical region championships – Europe, North America and Asia-Pacific. The winners of these events earn the right to attend the ITCC as well.
New Zealand climbers have featured strongly in this event with many consecutive titles in both the men’s and women’s events. So much so, that NZ have had more than just two National representatives attending the ITCC World Champs on several occasions. Recently, NZ had the chance to send five climbers to the ITCC – the two National Champs, the two defending ITCC champs and an APTCC Champion as well!
