Arboriculture Apprentice

Hamilton is known for its natural environment, with street and park trees an important feature of the city scape. Our City Parks team are responsible for the physical work on those trees, and are looking for a keen person to join our crew.

In this role you will learn how to maintain established trees across the city. We're after a committed and enthusiastic person willing to learn and become a qualified arborist.

Our unit is a tight-knit team and we need someone who works well alongside others. You will also need to be able to communicate clearly and effectively. If you are able to work in a team environment with high expectations of behaviour - this is the role for you. The recruiting rate is $18.93 per hour.

Specialist Advisor - Arborist

The Earth, Streams and Trees team is part of the Specialist Unit in the Resource Consents Department and is based in the CBD. The team is involved in a wide range of development projects, including major subdivisions and nationally significant infrastructure projects.  We cover the entire Auckland region and are passionate about preventing and minimising environmental risks to trees whilst promoting sustainable development in a fast growing city.

 

He angitūtanga: The opportunity

 

You will be working with a wide range of customers across the region, assessing and providing specialist technical input into complex resource consents in regard to trees to ensure their appropriate protection is achieved in accordance with the provisions of the Auckland Unitary Plan (Operative in Part).

 

Experience of tree evaluation in urban and rural contexts would also be an advantage. You will be expected to work with applicants and planners to seek the best practical environmental outcomes using a proactive and solution-driven approach. You must be competent in critically evaluating complex proposals in consent applications.

 

He kōrero mōu: About you

 

This role would suit an individual with several years’ experience in the arboriculture industry and a tertiary qualification in arboriculture (or a related discipline). You are someone with experience specifically in tree evaluation in an urban and rural context. You have an understanding of the Resource Management Act and associated planning legislation and knowledge of council process. An understanding of the Auckland Council regulatory framework (including Auckland Council legacy district plans and the Auckland Council Unitary Plan (Operative in Part) in relation to trees is also desirable.

Wellington City Council is looking for an experienced and professional arborist to step into a new role as Team Leader for Arboriculture in Wellington City. This is a rare and exciting opportunity for an arborist to join the dedicated arboricultural team who manage Wellington City Council's tree population.

This is a brand new position reporting to the Team Manager Arboriculture. As Team Leader, you will lead the team of ten arborists to deliver the team's day to day operational management and project manage large and complex tree work for WCC's team.

You will be expected to provide technical support and training to apprentices and staff and ensure all tree work is carried out safely, efficiently and professionally. You will also be carrying out tree asset collection, risk assessments and updating Councils significant tree monitoring list accordingly.
 
The person we are looking for will be fully experienced and have a comprehensive knowledge and proven skills in all aspects of practical and technical arboriculture. The ideal candidate will have a Class 2 driver's licence, TRAQ or QTRA risk assessment training and be a Primary ITO work place assessor - but for the right person this training will be provided.  Minimum requirement are Class 1 drivers licence and NZQA level 4 Arboriculture or international equivalent of over 5 years' experience.

About you

  • A minimum of 3-5 years' proven experience as an arboriculture team leader/foreman
  • National Certificate in Arboriculture Level 4 or equivalent experience/qualifications
  • Strong focus on HSE, and integrate them into your daily duties
  • Experience in the use of modern arboriculture equipment and techniques
  • The ability to direct, motivate and manage a team within a hands-on supervisory role, as well as provide training as required
  • A strong customer focus & sound written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience using electronic devices, the MS Office suite, databases, and management systems
  • A full and clean NZ driver's licence (manual) is essential whilst an HT licence (Class 2) is preferred
  • Project/staff management experience

The opportunity 

Auckland Council’s Community Facilities Department is an exceptional facilities function (for assets of both land and buildings) that is financially astute and delivers on expectations and aspirations. As kaitiaki (guardian) of facilities, we have an important role in facilitating the wider social, economic, environmental and cultural outcomes that promote the well being of our communities. 

Arboriculture and Ecological Restoration Specialists work out of the Operational Management & Maintenance Unit, the remit of which is to ensure a seamless delivery of high quality management and maintenance of council assets (green, open space and built) across the Auckland region. In these roles, no two days are the same. They are hands on within a diverse portfolio across a number of different landscapes. 

You will enjoy the support of experienced likeminded colleagues with a strong team ethos. Dependant on the level of your role daily duties might include managing contractors and suppliers, developing plans for the ongoing maintenance of trees and identified ecological areas in local parks and public open spaces, fostering relationships within communities, conducting safety assessments and proactively making process improvements. You will also provide technical advice and contribute to design and tree protection measures involving utility works, infrastructure and land development. Additionally, you will participate in planting programmes that provide for natural habitats and ecosystems. As the point of contact for any queries on the maintenance of arboriculture and ecological restoration programmes you will be focused on improving our natural environment while creating self-sustaining environments for the benefit of the public. 

About you 

Because of the technical skills and experience required to successfully carry out this role, you will have a recognised arboriculture qualification and a clean driver’s licence. More broadly, you will be a collaborative team player with commercial acumen who is passionate about the environment and consistently strives to improve efficiencies. Having recognised experience in maintenance delivery, you willl be able to spot issues early and put maintenance plans in place. Importantly, you will also have demonstrated involvement in contract management of suppliers and contractors to achieve service deliverables.
