Arbor Day is recognised in New Zealand on the 5th of June and has been celebrated for 153 years. It is traditionally a time to look at planting a tree during the winter to help provide trees for the benefit of future generations. The Tree Benefit Cards have been developed to show the environmental service benefits that trees can provide. During the month of June (Arbor Month), there will be a display of the Tree Benefit Cards at the Botanic Gardens on 10 large trees around the visitors centre area.
The cards will be displayed in selected trees at the botanic gardens from 5th June until the 3rd July. The cards contain information on the type of tree, where it is from, and outline some of the environmental service benefits that trees provide to Aucklanders each day.
At the visitors centre, there will be a small display about the benefits of trees, the council's urban ngahere strategy and a quiz for the family to complete when they find a tree in the gardens with a benefit card attached. A map showing the locations of the 10 trees with the benefit cards will also be available.
