He angitūtanga: The opportunity


Auckland Council’s Parks & Community Facilities team has an opportunity for a permanent full-time Urban Tree Specialist. You’ll be joining the Urban Forest team, as part of the wider Regional Arboriculture and Ecological team, and essentially be functioning as a tree asset manager.


This role offers flexibility in your office-base work, allowing you to work from any of our Council hubs or bespoke areas.


As a subject matter expert in specimen trees, you will be responsible for championing the care and management of Tamaki Makaurau’s urban tree population. You’ll promote and advocate for the importance and benefits of urban trees and participate in green infrastructure design. This is a vital role for enhancing urban canopy cover whilst delivering tangible results for the community.

You could expect to work on:

  • Processing of Tree Owner Approval applications within your allocated local boards

  • Provide technical advice in areas such as infrastructure renewal projects, tree compliance and insurance issues

  • Undertake tree assessments, scoping tree planting locations and aftercare practices


He kōrero mōu: About you


This role is ideal for someone currently working at a consultancy level. Passionate about arboriculture, green infrastructure and the environment, you’ll be well versed in tree identification, biology, physiology and visual tree assessment.


Your field of study may have been natural resource management, forestry/urban forestry, green infrastructure, arboriculture, environmental science or similar, and your experience within a relevant field will also come with a high standard of oral and written communication.

You’ll be a natural at managing stakeholder relationships, and have the ability to build and maintain relationships collaboratively.
