Kia mahi ngātahi mō Pōneke mō tōna āpōpō | Working together for Wellington's future.
As a great harbour capital city, Wellington City Council has established a vision for Wellington as 'an inclusive, sustainable and creative capital for people to live, work and play'. The future of Wellington is compact, inclusive & connected, greener, resilient, vibrant and prosperous.
The Parks Operations team provide a critical customer facing support service, ensuring the city's residents and visitors enjoy a well-managed and maintained environment. The Tree Team is part of the wider Parks, Sport & Recreation group that provide comprehensive tree maintenance services and advice across the City, including its parks and reserves, town belt, Botanic Gardens and road network.
About the role
This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with a tertiary qualification in arboriculture, or parks and open spaces management (or a related field) and a good understanding of tree work but what's unique about this role is that you don't need to be a technical/operational expert. The team already has two very capable technical team leads - this role is focused on the management of all aspects of the city's tree assets, operational services delivery and development and maintenance of a mixed age healthy population of trees within Wellington City. You will be responsible for delivering planned business outputs, managing staff, resource consent advice and contracts associated with this delivery, and ensuring that related marketing, customer service, and relationship management goals are met.
We're quite a unique Council team as we have our own Tree team - we don't contract those services out, unlike some other Councils. The team are tight knit and know their stuff - they pride themselves on their skill and professionalism.
About you
As well as a relevant tertiary qualification and an understanding of tree work, you will be able to effectively manage and deliver projects from initiation through to implementation. Team management skills, as well as the ability to lead leaders, is important. You'll also have strong interpersonal and communication skills and be able to build and maintain strong relationships with various stakeholders, through consultation and partnership. You will need a full, clean class 1 drivers licence (class 2 is preferred).
This role could suit a seasoned arborist or technical team lead, looking to step up, or someone without the technical skills but experience in a similar operational industry and strong leadership and project delivery skills.
