A Minimum Industry Standard for tree protection
This book is one in a series of Minimum Industry Standards produced by Arboriculture Australia Ltd and the New Zealand Arboricultural Association in consultation with the national arboriculture community in both countries. These industry peer-reviewed documents provide a ‘body of knowledge’ which is shared by practitioners and can be used as the basis for training, dissemination of skills and professional development.
This document covers the work tasks of utility tree work around conductors and other assets, including a brief summary of the underpinning knowledge necessary to select and perform suitable pruning operations to achieve a variety of objectives.
MIS503 Tree Protection (for use in New Zealand)
Trees growing in urban environments are vulnerable to mechanical damage, environmental change and other impacts that result from land development, construction, installation of utility services and related activities.
Arborists should be able to assist with preservation and protection of trees on sites where land alteration and other work and activities are occurring around trees and recognise where tree health and structural stability could be affected. Arborists should be able to inform the design, assist in the planning and guide the implementation of work on sites with trees, to ensure that activities do not negatively impact the longevity or stability of a tree. A Project Arborist is ideally engaged in the planning and design phase to identify trees worthy of protection and guide the design of site developments.
